Canboulay Bow TieThe Fire That Sparked a Legacy

Before modern-day Carnival, there was Canboulay—a historic festival rooted in the 19th century when freed Africans in Trinidad reenacted the sugar cane harvest processions of their ancestors. "Canboulay" comes from the French cannes brulées, meaning "burnt cane," symbolizing both hardship and triumph. The celebration was once banned by colonial powers, but the people fought back, preserving it as a cornerstone of Carnival.

The Canboulay Bow Tie honors this fiery spirit with its vibrant orange and black leaf pattern, representing both the burning cane fields and the unshakable cultural pride that arose from them. Handcrafted from Ankara African fabric by Afro-Caribbean artisans, this bow tie is a statement of resilience and heritage.
